Overview

Two systems: city jobs (Army, Grocer, Casino, Medical, Education, Law) and player companies (director-run, stars, job points, specials). Almost always you want a player company for the perks. City jobs are for a few unlocks and merits later.

For employees first: placeholder job → understand JP/stars → pick a company → apply. Directing is a short later note. Hiring list: Company finder.

Park in a city job briefly

Starter jobs need a short interview (three questions). First hire in a starter job gives 5 JP for that job. Passive specials often stay after you leave. Inactive 400 days and you get fired.

  • Army / Casino / Grocer - fine on day zero while you hunt a company. Mostly skip long-term except the Affronted honor (offend all interviewers) if you care.
  • Medical - ladder toward reviving. Do this when you want that unlock; it is the big city-job reason.
  • Education / Law - specific passives and merits. Come back when you need them.

City wages and low-star company pay are weak next to travel after 15. You are here for specials and unlocks.

Earn job points and stars

In a player company, daily trains and job points scale with stars: roughly 1 JP and 1 train per star per day (7★ ≈ 7 JP). Stars come from customers, income, company age, and how you compare to other companies of that type. Higher stars = better specials and harder hiring bars.

Taxes and no wage

Many high-star newbie companies pay no salary; the specials are the pay. Some tax low work-stat staff (cans, EDVDs, etc.) because the company runs at a loss to hold stars. Ask before you apply.

Grow work stats enough to hire

Manual / Intelligence / Endurance live on your home page. Meeting a position's requirement is about +90 work-stat effectiveness; each doubling of the required stats adds about +5, toward +100+. Directors care because effectiveness drives company income.

Day-zero stats can still get into many 1★-7★ Sweet Shops, Adult Novelties, Flower Shops, Property Brokers, Firework Stands, and similar. Popular 10★ types want much higher work stats. Oil Rigs / Fitness Centers are not day-one applications. Wiki: Working Stats.

Pick an early company

Pick the special for what you are doing now (funding a PI rental, travel capacity, gym, education). Check the live company page for current perk text.

CompanyWhy people join
Sweet ShopCans (income). 10★ happy specials if you jump sometimes
Adult NoveltyEDVDs / 10★ happy-jump company if you jump a lot
Candle Shop7★: 1 JP → 5 energy (cap 100 JP/day). Awareness passive
Hair Salon7★: 30 min education off per JP
Toy Shop / Flower Shop+5 abroad capacity for plushies / flowers; Flower also cuts addiction
Property BrokerTrader perks; 7★ random property lottery; 10★ upgrade discount
Clothing Store7★ 75% mug reduction; combat passives

Under 15: pick something that funds a PI rental or helps travel (AN, Flower, Toy). After 15: match the special to flying / gym / education.

Move up when work stats allow

Once work stats and activity are solid, directors of higher-star or more contested types become realistic. Still verify specials live.

CompanyWhy people join
Grocery StoreCans + consumable cooldown / boost - Sweet Shop upgrade
RestaurantWhale energy (cans + JP→energy) if you can actually afford the cans
Music Store3★ +30% gym XP; later combat passives
Cruise LineExtra travel items + addiction reduction; 10★ beats Toy/Flower capacity
PubNerve / crime training; crowded 10★ market
Law FirmBust / OC / bail merits and tools
Gun ShopWar loadout visibility and gun perks

Apply clean

  1. Pick a type from this page (or Company finder).
  2. Start at 10★ listings and work down. Messaging directly can help your chances and help you get familiar with how that company operates.
  3. Include work stats, how long you plan to stay, that you will log in daily, and that you will keep addiction in check.
  4. Ask: trains, drug / inactivity efficiency rules, salary or tax, anything else required.
  5. If you leave, many directors prefer Monday so the weekly report is clean; say so if you mean it.

Buying trains with cash is optional; only with surplus. Prices swing hard by type and star.

Direct later, not day one

Directing is a mid/late project: newspaper → job listing → company type → start company (or buy one). Business education and stocks (TCP sales, TGP ads) make high stars much easier.

Company trades

Companies go in the trade UI (blue). "Add it outside the trade" is a scam (Avoiding scams). Sell-to-game formula is roughly 75% of upgrade cost + 5% of lifetime income; check that before you dump a company cheap to a player.

Do this

  1. Take a placeholder city job on day zero.
  2. Apply to a player company whose special matches your stage; verify specials in-game.
  3. Ask salary/tax, trains, and activity rules before you accept.
  4. Work daily for JP; move up when work stats allow.
  5. Skip directing until travel and education are humming.

Frequently asked questions

Should I join a city job or a player company in Torn?

Join a player company for the specials. City jobs (Medical, Education, Law) matter later for specific unlocks and merits. Army / Casino / Grocer are fine as a day-zero placeholder.

What are job points?

Job points (JP) come from working. In player companies you generally get about one JP per star per day (a 7★ company ≈ 7 JP/day). Spend them on that company's specials and item shop.
